Unlike printer ink cartridges, which contain liquid ink, a _*toner cartridge*_ contains toner, a fine powder which is is used in laser printers and photocopiers to form the text and images printed on a page.
Heat sensitive, the toner is fed from the _*toner cartridge*_ and subjected to heat which bonds it with the paper. Originally, toner was poured directly into a special reservoir in the printer. Today however, it is fed directly from independent toner cartridges housed in the printer.
These printer toner cartridges can be easily removed and replaced when they are empty, while some 3rd party companies provide a toner cartridge refill service, allowing empty cartridges to be reused.
